Snowden was originally part of the lands owned by Peter Jefferson, and was presumably named after Snowdon, the mountain in Wales near where the Jefferson family was said to have originated.[1]
Located in Buckingham County, Virginia, the Snowden property borders the James River. The estate was inherited by Randolph Jefferson following his father’s death. The original house, built by Peter Jefferson, burned to the ground and another house was built in a different location by Captain John Harris, the owner of the property at the time, around 1857.
Owners of Snowden following the Jefferson family, in addition to Captain Harris, included John Moon, who purchased the property in 1870, and Mrs. D. W. Hancock, who owned it in 1901.[2]
