Due to poor winter weather conditions on the mountaintop, Monticello will be closed to the public on Thursday, February 20.
David Stone (1770-1818) was a Democratic Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1799-1801) and the U.S. Senate (1801-1807, 1813-1814). In his home state of North Carolina, he served as governor (1808-1810), lawyer, legislator, and judge.
Stone was a member of the House of Representatives during the election of 1800 and voted for Thomas Jefferson when that election was forced into the House. Stone supported Jefferson in repealing the Sedition Act and in endorsing the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase.
Stone and Jefferson appear to have exchanged fewer than a dozen letters.
