Charles Everett (d. 1848) (also spelled Everette) was a physician for James Monroe and for Thomas Jefferson and his family. Everett's name first appears in Jefferson's records (as "Everard") in 1798.[1] In 1804, Everett purchased Charlottesville lot number fifty-nine; in 1806, he acquired lots seventy-three and seventy-four, where he made his office and stable.[2]

Everett moved to Belmont seven miles east of town in 1813. By this time, he was serving his first term in the House of Delegates (1813-1814) (he would also serve from 1819-1820). In 1820, he purchased a 400-acre tract called Pouncey's from Jefferson, and from then on the area was known as Everettsville.[3] He died unmarried, freeing his slaves and willing his estate to his nephew, Dr. Charles D. Everett.[4]
