This European native is highly variable in nature and was cultivated there by 1600. It was introduced into American gardens before the eighteenth century. Scotch Briar Rose is of easy culture, producing an abundance of lovely flowers on arching branches. This rose may correspond to one Jefferson referred to as "Prim rose," a possible reference to the flower's resemblance to Primulas. Single yellow flowers produced abundantly on highly prickled, reddish stems. Shrubs grow to 4 feet high and spread by suckers.
