In an effort to add final touches to the house, Thomas Jefferson ordered eight Italian marble hearth surrounds for Monticello’s first-floor fireplaces and had them installed shortly before he died in 1826.
Seven of the eight Italian marble fireplace surrounds survive in their Jefferson-era locations—only the South Square Room’s is missing. The Restoration team is making plans to replace the wooden surround later this year, returning the room to its Jefferson-era appearance and condition.
