In honor of Black History Month, the Monticello Department of Archaeology is hosting an open house featuring displays of recent excavations and artifacts, hands-on activities for all ages, and walking tours.
Join archaeologists as they share what we have recently learned about the lives of enslaved people here on the landscape as well as ongoing work by our Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery.
Walking Tour Details (11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm)
Join archaeologists for a 90-minute walking tour into the woodlands and visit the location of last summer's dig at Site 30. Learn how our excavations reveal new information about the daily lives of enslaved agricultural laborers at Monticello.
Tours will leave from the Bronze Plantation Model in the visitor center courtyard at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm.
This walk follows a historic road that is fairly flat, with uneven terrain in some areas. Sturdy shoes are recommended. The walk is approximately 1 mile round trip.
