Sorting and cataloguing artifacts

Join us for a hands-on Archaeology lab workshop with Monticello's archaeologists and find out how we learn about the past through artifacts.

Kids ages 7-12 and their favorite grown-ups are invited to learn what archaeologists do, help us analyze real artifacts found at Monticello, and participate in fun activities.

Workshop Details

Time: Sign-up for an hour-long session, offered at either 11 am or 1 pm. Each session includes the same activities and information.

LocationClassrooms 5 and 6 on the lower level of Monticello's David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center.

Ages: This program is geared towards kids 7-12 and their accompanying grown-up. We will have some optional activities for participants younger than 5 or older than 12. Please register in advance for this program, and provide age(s) of attending archaeologists-in-training.

Adults: Tickets are required for both children and accompanying adults. The activities are designed for attending adults to participate, and adults are asked to remain with children at all times during the program.

Clothing: Attendees are encouraged to wear comfy clothes that they don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Activities

Sorting and cataloguing artifacts

Artifact Sorting: Using real artifacts discovered at Monticello, participants will learn how to identify and sort artifacts into different categories. As a group we will discuss how these categories can help us identify how artifacts were used: cooking, sewing, gardening, etc.

Cataloging and Stratigraphy: Participants will record information about artifacts such as color, materials, and measurements. Then as a group we will learn the importance of understanding not only what an item is, but where it came from and how to date when it was discarded.

Pottery-making: Participants will learn how archaeologists can identify different types of pottery, where they came from, and when they date to. Each archaeologist-in-training will then try their own skills at making a pot, which they can decorate and take home.
