Today we at Monticello mourn the loss of one of our own: Joshua Scott, our Vice President for Development.

A first-generation college student, Joshua attended the University of Virginia on a full academic scholarship, majoring in American Government and Religious Studies. After graduation, Joshua began what was a purpose-driven career. He worked for the late Virginia State Senator Emily Couric before moving on to the UVA Center for Politics, and then fundraising for the UVA Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center. Joshua came to Monticello in 2012.

Although his career has been cut tragically short, it was distinguished by many achievements during his tenure at Monticello. Most recently, his key role in our Mountaintop Project campaign, the multi-year effort to restore the mountaintop, and to tell the stories of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Through this and countless other contributions, Joshua played a critical role in preserving Monticello for generations to come.

Joshua was a warm, caring, and thoughtful colleague and mentor. We are all better for having known him, and we will miss him terribly.
