Gallica roses are among the most ancient, and this miniature centifolia form was introduced into cultivation before 1664. It is also known as the Burgundian Rose (R. burgundica). Philadelphia nurseryman Bernard McMahon lists Rosa centifolia v. Burgundy in The American Gardener.
